A) I am the U.S. secretary
of defense, which is one of the most important positions on the
president's cabinet. In this job I am in charge of all of our
country's military forces and am the main adviser to the president
about the military and our nation's defense.
B) I became the secretary of
defense in December 2006. Before that I was the president of
Texas A&M University. I have also held other important jobs
in the U.S. government including serving as the head of the Central
Intelligence Agency, or CIA.
C) I have been saying that
this summer the United States plans to bring home up to 30,000
troops from Iraq that were part of the "surge." The
surge began last year as a way to get violence under control
in Iraq. Last week, during a visit to Iraq, I said that after
those troops leave, I was in favor of keeping the troop numbers
at the same levels they were at before the surge.
