A) I was born in 1955 in Texas,
one of eight children in a Mexican-American family. I grew up
poor and I was the first in my family to go to college. After
I became a lawyer, I started working for the governor of Texas,
who at that time was George W. Bush. When Mr. Bush became president,
he made me the top lawyer for his administration.
B) In 2005, President Bush
appointed me as U.S. attorney general, putting me in charge of
making sure our country's laws are followed. But I have been
criticized for doing some things that many people think went
against the laws of our country. During my time in office, FBI
agents collected information on private citizens without a warrant.
This is against the law. Recently, Congress wanted to know if
I had also played a part in firing nine federal attorneys for
political reasons. I angered members of both political parties
in Congress by saying I didn't remember details about my role
in this.
C) In the last few months,
many people called for me to resign from my job, but the president
stood up for me each time. But, in late August, I announced that
I would be leaving my job as of September 17. President Bush
said that I am a good man and people have been unfair to me.
