Iraq's
neighbors have taken in most of the country's refugees.
What do you think it would
feel like if you were forced to leave your home because of war?
Where would you go?
This map gives you an idea of where most of the Iraq refugees
are going. About 2 million Iraqis have had to flee their homes
but are still inside Iraq. Another 2 million have fled the country,
and most of those have gone to neighboring countries. Syria and
Jordan have taken in the most Iraqi refugees. Syria has taken
in more than a million Iraqis, and Jordan has taken in about
750,000. The large numbers of refugees have put a strain on the
resources of these small countries. What problems do you think
would be caused by large numbers of refugees arriving in this
country? What specific problems do you think refugees fleeing
a war might have? Recently, Syria and Jordan have taken steps
to close their doors to most Iraqi refugees. Other countries
in the area have started restricting the number of Iraqi refugees
as well.
A United Nations organization works to help refugees. UNHCR stands
for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The UNHCR
gives aid to refugees around the world, and provides lists of
refugees to countries that can take them in. What do you think
the UNHCR can do to help more Iraqi refugees find homes?
