This annual holiday celebrates the importance of conservation.

As you know, many people are worried about problems having to do with our environment. These problems include air pollution, water pollution, animal and plants becoming extinct, loss of rain forest land, human overpopulation, global warming, and more. Most scientists think the increase in greenhouse gases, which trap heat in our atmosphere, is responsible for global warming. Scientists now believe this is largely due to human activity. What do you think is the most important environmental problem?

It is easy to get discouraged about facts like these. But for at least one day every year, we think about how to fix these problems. Earth Day is celebrated every April 22nd. This holiday began in 1970. It focuses on conservation -- preserving and protecting our environment. Cities and towns around the world hold events and rallies to help people learn more about how important it is to protect Earth's natural resources. Scientists say we can all figure out ways to "go green" - living a lifestyle with less waste and more attention to the environment. This year, some people want Earth Day activities to focus on renewable energy -- natural energy sources that are unlimited, like sunlight, wind, and rain.

Another reason Earth Day is still important is that it is a day of action. On Earth Day, many people volunteer to do things for the environment. What are some things people do on Earth Day to help the environment?
