Do the statements on the screen surprise you? Clearly, the United States plays a huge role in Mexico's drug trade, both through the large amounts of illegal drugs that are sold here, and through the thousands of weapons that are smuggled into Mexico from across the border. Why do you think so many people in our country use illegal drugs? Last month U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton paid a two-day visit to Mexico to talk about the drug war and our country's role in it. Her visit is part of President Obama's plan for the U.S. government to accept responsibility for the part our country plays in Mexico's drug problem. Do you think this is a good idea? Mrs. Clinton noted the huge demand in our country for drugs and said we "have a co-responsibility" in Mexico's war on drugs. The Obama administration also announced a plan that will place more U.S. agents and other personnel along the border. Since Mexico has stricter gun laws than the U.S., most of the weapons used by drug cartels, come from our country. The White House has pledged to help stem the flow of weapons into Mexico by doing more thorough inspections of vehicles traveling across our border into Mexico. Mexican leaders note that no matter how hard they fight drug dealers, their efforts will be in vain if the drug dealers keep getting weapons from Americans. What else could the U.S. do to help with these problems? |
