NATO is re-evaluating
its role in Afghanistan.
The terrorist group al Qaeda
was responsible for the 2001 terrorist attacks. Al Qaeda was
based in Afghanistan at that time. fter the attacks, the United
States and NATO began military attacks on al Qaeda and other
groups that helped al Qaeda in Afghanistan. NATO military units
are made up of troops from several NATO countries, including
the United States. This mission is still going on, and the situation
in Afghanistan has gotten worse in recent months. Al Qaeda attacks
on U.S. and NATO troops, as well as on civilians in Afghanistan,
have increased in recent months. Have you heard much about
this in the news?
The entire military operation in Afghanistan is under NATO's
control. But more and more, the United States is really in control
of military actions in Afghanistan. As you can see, NATO has
more than 50,000 troops there. These troops are from NATO countries
and some non-NATO countries, but about half of them are U.S.
troops. And the United States has its own separate force in Afghanistan,
made up of nearly 30,000 troops. President Obama says he will
send about 17,000 more U.S. troops to Afghanistan this year.
He is asking NATO countries to send more troops as well. But
many experts say this is unlikely to happen. Some NATO countries
would like to bring their troops out of Afghanistan. And President
Obama says that the United States may have to take over most
of the mission in Afghanistan. Do you think NATO should contribute
more troops to the mission?
