The millions of people who have been displaced by the violence live in crude refugee camps. Since the beginning of the conflict of Darfur, a number of international groups have sent aid workers to help these refugees get the most basic things they need to survive, including food, water that is drinkable, called potable, and medicine if any is available. Despite their efforts, living conditions in these camps have been horrible, and now it appears things may get worse. After the announcement of the charges against him, an angry Bashir demanded that all the groups who are aiding the refugees leave Sudan immediately. He said that these aid groups are really there for political reasons. Why would he say this? Not only are the refugees living in miserable conditions, but they face terrible violence from the Janjaweed, who often lurk near the camps. Every time the refugees leave the camps for water or firewood, they face being attacked. Can you imagine having to live like this? The United States and other Western countries have long been criticized for not taking more action. What do you think the U.S. government should do? Do you think it should take more drastic measures against Sudan? Do you understand why it is difficult to solve the situation? |
