"Slumdog Millionaire" recently won Best Picture at the Academy Awards.

At last week's Academy Awards, one movie took the ceremony's highest honors: "Slumdog Millionaire." Have you heard anything about this movie? This movie was filmed in Mumbai, India's largest city.

The movie tells the story of three children from Mumbai's slums. A slum is a densely populated part of a city where the people are very poor. Two brothers, Jamal and Salim, lose their slum home in an attack by an anti-Muslim mob. At right, you see the brothers running for their lives. The brothers and a friend named Latika are played by three different sets of actors as they age from small children to adults. The three children struggle to survive on their own and later have to escape from gangsters.

The movie begins with the adult Jamal appearing on a game show where he must know the answers to difficult questions. In flashbacks, the film shows that Jamal has learned the answers through the experiences he, Salim, and Latika had while trying to survive. Many people enjoyed this film a lot for its exciting pace, outstanding child actors, and the love story between Jamal and Latika. Yet some people in India have criticized the film for its focus on Mumbai's poverty and crime. They say that there is much more to Mumbai and India than this. Do you understand why they might feel this way?
