Not long ago, President Obama
sat down with leaders in Congress and urged them to support his
plan to help revive the economy. The U.S. economy has fallen
into a recession. A recession is a long period of economic decline,
including things like increased unemployment and decreases in
pay. How do you think the recession is affecting people in
your area? The president, along with many other people, believes
that the way to revive the economy is to spend a lot of money
on job creation and programs to help people who are struggling.
Does this make sense to you? Why or why not? President
Obama worked with Democrats in Congress to come up with a spending
bill designed to stimulate the economy. The bill was first introduced
and debated in the House of Representatives. The president visited
Congress himself, which is unusual for presidents, to ask them
to support his plan. He particularly wanted Republicans to support
the bill. Why do you think he wanted his bill to have Republican
support? A bill with support from both parties has a better
chance of passing. President Obama also wants to start off his
first term by showing he can work with his supporters and his
opponents. The bill passed the House 244 to 188, but no Republicans
voted for it. Then it moved to the Senate. Let's look
at what's in the president's plan |
