These five people will
hold top posts in President-elect Barack Obama's administration.
On the screen you see some of the people President-elect Barack
Obama has picked to be his top advisers when he takes office
in January. The president's top advisers are a group that is
known as the Cabinet. Have you heard of the president's Cabinet?
On the top left you see Hillary Clinton. She and Mr. Obama had
a long struggle against one another during the presidential election,
but Mr. Obama has chosen her for a very important job: secretary
of state. The secretary of state is in charge of relations between
the United States and other countries. In the center is
Eric Holder Jr., who will be the nation's attorney general --
the top person in charge of enforcing our nation's laws. Timothy
Geithner will be the secretary of the treasury. In this position
he will be Mr. Obama's top adviser on economic issues. New Mexico
Governor Bill Richardson has been named secretary of commerce
and will be in charge of issues relating to business and industry.
And Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano has been named secretary
of homeland security. This position was created after the terrorist
attacks of September 11th, 2001. The person who holds this office
works to keep the country safe. In an unusual move, Obama asked
the current secretary of defense, Robert Gates, to stay on in
that role. Why do you think he did that? "I assembled
this team because I am a strong believer in strong personalities
and strong opinions," Mr. Obama said of these choices. What
do you think he means by this? |
