All across the city of Mumbai,
India, mourners lit candles in memory of the victims of a terrible
tragedy that took place in that city recently. More than 180
people were killed and more than 300 people were injured in terrorist
attacks that took place over three days in late November. Terrorism
is violence or the threat of violence for political gains.
The Mumbai attacks were carried out by 10 men carrying guns
and other weapons. The gunmen arrived in Mumbai by boat, then
split up and attacked several crowded locations in the city,
including a train station, restaurants, and hotels. They also
attacked a hospital and a building that contained a Jewish center
and a synagogue, which is a Jewish place of worship. Their final
attack took place at the Taj Mahal hotel, where they killed many
people and took about 200 people hostage. There, all but one
of the gunmen were killed by Indian police in a shootout. The
captured gunman is a 21-year-old Pakistani man named Azam Amir
Kasab. Where is Pakistan in relation to India? How do you
think this attack has affected relations between India and Pakistan?
