Conditions in Afghanistan have deteriorated drastically.

The man shown here is Hamid Karzai, the president of Afghanistan. He helped overthrow the Taliban in 2001. But many people believe that he has little power in Afghanistan outside of the capital city of Kabul. They worry that the Taliban and other violent groups are regaining control of much of the country. What do you think would happen if the Taliban takes control of Afghanistan again? Even though most people in Afghanistan may not support the Taliban, they may be afraid to take sides against such a strict and violent group, experts say. Another problem is that U.S. and NATO planes regularly drop bombs on enemy locations, but innocent people have also been killed by these bombings. These deaths have turned many Afghan people against the U.S. and the troops fighting there. Can you understand why Afghan people would feel this way? Food and fuel are very expensive in Afghanistan because it is so dangerous to do business there. This is another reason that life is so hard for people in Afghanistan. U.S. and NATO troops are supposed to be rebuilding Afghanistan from the damage caused by the war and violence there. But this rebuilding has gone much slower than planned. Why do you think it is taking so long to rebuild Afghanistan? What effect do you think this is having on the people who live there?

The quote here is from one of the top leaders in the U.S. military. What do you think he meant by this statement? What do you think the United States should be doing to help Afghanistan?
