The Democratic National Convention started on August 25th.

On August 25th, the Democratic National Convention got started in Denver, Colorado. Here you see Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama. The Democratic convention was historic because Sen. Obama is the first African American ever to be nominated for president. Near the bottom of the picture are his wife Michelle, and their two daughters. Michelle Obama gave a big speech to tell the audience about her background as well as her husband's background. What do you know about the Obamas? Did you see any of her speech? If so, what did you think of it? Over the next three days, many other important Democrats also gave speeches praising Barack Obama. And the convention was the first chance for many people to see him with his vice presidential candidate, Sen. Joe Biden. Sen. Biden has been in the Senate for nearly 35 years. Why do you think he was chosen as Barack Obama's running mate? Do you think he was a good choice?

Many people were watching the Democratic convention because of the candidate who narrowly lost to Barack Obama in the primary elections, Sen. Hillary Clinton. Many of her supporters went to the convention to cheer for her speech. She told them that it was now time for Democrats to support Barack Obama. Do you think it would be difficult to support the candidate who was once your rival? Why or why not?
