The war in Iraq has been going on for nearly four years, and more than 3,000 U.S. troops have been killed. Most experts say that the situation in Iraq is not improving, and many say it is getting worse. Last week, President Bush was scheduled to announce his new strategy for the war. When this story was written, the new strategy hadn't been announced yet. But the plan was expected to involve sending several thousand more troops to Iraq, in addition to the 132,000 who are already there. What do you think the president's goal should be in Iraq? Some sources said the president would send at least 20,000 more troops to Iraq. CNN reported last month that the president was considering sending up to 40,000 more troops. Members of the president's administration call the increase a "surge" -- suggesting that the increase is only temporary. The president's advisers were said to be debating whether to send the new troops into Iraq all at once, or to send them to Iraq in phases. In addition to the surge, President Bush was considering a new program to create jobs for Iraqis. But it is the troop increase that is causing the most disagreement. |
